Lessig's blog has posted an interesting letter from the McCain campaign to Youtube about their take-downs of videos that "are clearly privileged under the fair use doctrine".

Hoist by their own petard.

When every publication involves copying at some point in its lifetime, and all then have to be appraised by a 'censorship' committee somewhere to determine whether they can remain published (on a 'fair use' basis), or whether their provenant publishers can have their veto, such channels simply end up detrimentally sanitised and must inevitably spur competition from unsanitised channels.

There's simply too much wasted energy going on for this to continue indefinitely.

It at least makes a better case for copying of published works for public retention, given streaming is so clearly unreliable.

Copyright must be abolished.

After all, when even politicians find themselves censored by the privileges they felt so persuaded to grant to publishers, then perhaps things have gone too far!
