Patents blocking stem cell research
One of the most promising areas for medical research are stem cells, and now that the Obama Administration has lifted many restrictions on their use, you would think this line of research would be booming. Not so according to Medindia which reports that there has been such a rush to patent in this area that research is in fact very difficult now.

This is really a response to "California Appeals Court ... not unfair competition", but that page comes up truncated right between the phrase "Submit Comment" and the actual submission form, which prevents me from posting this where it belongs. Please fix the bugs in your website.
It is worth noting how horrible the precedent would have been had this court ruled the other way. For instance, it would have opened the way for HBO to sue NBC, ABC, FOX, and CBS for "unfair competition" for providing a glut of free, ad-supported television content. Or imagine Aquafina suing to have the taps in your kitchen and bathroom shut off ...
