backLord of the Rings... (Strictly speaking this should have been Stephan's post, but he seems to have handed it off to me.) Disagree with my view below that copyright is absurd? Wondering what would happen to the movie industry without copyright? Luckily the marvelous Mike Masnick manage to answer both questions in a single post. If you still don't believe, go take a look at Star Wreck. [Posted at 05/06/2009 11:53 AM by David K. Levine on User Innovation Comments Lord of the Rings particularly annoys me as an example of copyright when you consider the fact that it was created as ONE large copyrighted work.
Because the original publisher lacked the capacity to mass produce a book that was over 1,000 pages, it was arbitrarily chopped up into 3 separate books, leading the absurd result that three separate copyrights were created - requiring three sets of permissions and royalties when filmmakers wanted to adapt it. Why not just charge separate royalties for each chapter? Each paragraph? Each sentence? It clearly demonstrates how copyright law can be abused due to its near-infinite malleability.
